Striding through the land of giants   2 July 2009

Photographer Rob Suisted mentored Bryce McQuillan throughout the shoot and has continued to influence the young photographer’s work. Below is Suisted’s careful critique of the images McQuillan shot on the island, and some directions for future assignments.

Gecko
“Remember I was after behaviur or chance events? Or trying to use unusual lighting or different angles? You need to start work on these things, as it’s the biggest improvement you’re now ready to make.”

Flax Weevil
“I know this was the first time you’ve seen most of these bugs so the excitement of that is hard to get past. I’m mindful of that, but next you can work on getting the shots that other photographers don’t, lifting things above what everybody else can do with a bit of time and attention to your equipment.”

Cook Strait Giant Weta
“Great shot, but one of her antennae is lost—it would have been cool to see it sticking up. With critters, make sure you look closely at how they pose, flat antennae makes them look a bit lifeless.”
